Online marketplaces make it easy to compare products, but a professional-looking listing does not guarantee that a seller is trustworthy. Before paying, check the seller, the exact item, the platform’s buyer-protection rules, and the payment method.
Review seller history and listing details
Look at the age and consistency of the seller profile, recent reviews, completed transactions, return policy, and how clearly the item is described. Reviews can be manipulated, so do not rely on a star rating alone. Search for copied descriptions or product photos if the offer seems suspicious, and verify the model number, condition, accessories, and warranty.
Be skeptical of unusually low prices
Compare the total price with several established retailers. A steep discount on a popular phone, game console, ticket, or luxury product can be a lure. Check shipping charges and delivery estimates, and be wary of sellers who claim that many buyers are waiting or demand immediate payment.
Keep payment and communication on the platform
Do not move to an unfamiliar messaging app or pay by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or a payment method the platform says is not protected. Scammers may send fake payment confirmations, shipping labels, or links that imitate marketplace pages. Open the app or type the official website address yourself instead of following unexpected links.
Understand the protection policy before buying
- Check whether the platform protects the product category and payment method.
- Read the deadlines for reporting non-delivery, counterfeit items, or products that differ materially from the listing.
- Keep the listing, order confirmation, messages, tracking information, and packaging.
- Use tracked shipping for eligible sales and inspect the item promptly after delivery.
If something goes wrong
Report the issue through the platform’s official resolution center and contact your payment provider if needed. Change passwords if you entered credentials on a suspicious page. If you suspect identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery guidance.
The FTC online-shopping guide explains additional ways to reduce risk. Buyer-protection terms vary, so read the current policy before checkout.
