Mistral Large 4 Weights Are Available: Download, License and Hosting Reality

Mistral Large 4 is no longer just an API preview. The company has published a downloadable model repository on Hugging Face, marking a significant change from its October 6 announcement, when Mistral said weights would arrive later in the month.

What is available now?

The official Mistral Large 4 model repository provides weights and instructions for local or privately hosted inference. The model card describes a roughly one-trillion-parameter multimodal mixture-of-experts model, with around 52 billion parameters active per token including embeddings and output layers, and a one-million-token context window. Mistral also lists an NVFP4 quantized checkpoint targeting Nvidia Blackwell hardware.

Can you run it on an ordinary laptop?

Not realistically in its full released form. A model of this scale requires substantial storage, memory and computing infrastructure. The smaller quantized checkpoint reduces the footprint, but it does not turn Large 4 into a typical consumer-laptop model. Organizations should calculate GPU capacity, inference throughput, operating costs and security controls before committing.

What does the license allow?

Open weights do not automatically mean unrestricted open-source rights. Mistral’s model card points to a modified license and additional terms for model-as-a-service businesses. Anyone planning commercial hosting should read the actual license before deployment rather than relying on a headline saying the model is ‘open’.

How strong is the model?

Mistral claims strong results in coding, cyber defense and other professional workloads. Those are vendor assertions unless independently replicated on the final downloadable checkpoint. An API preview and a downloadable checkpoint should not be assumed identical in every benchmark or deployment setting.

What remains unknown?

Independent production results on the released checkpoint, real-world operating costs across different hardware, and the resilience of safety controls after local modification are still developing.

Bottom line

The important update is concrete availability: organizations can inspect and obtain the weights instead of waiting on a promised release. The trade-off is that hosting, governance, licensing and security become the operator’s responsibility.
